Hobby Art Supplies: Considerations for Selecting a Canvas

About Me
Turning imagination into crafts - crafts for preschoolers

My kids have such wild imaginations. They can always look at the world around them and not only see what's in front of them but also what could be within them. It's fun to create crafts that capture that imagination like making superhero masks and capes for their teddies. It's amazing what adventures these teddies have, and it's so much fun to capture their hijinx with crafts like scrapbooking, painting and making clothes. I am always looking for new crafts and I like to keep a track of what works (and what doesn't), so I started this blog to talk about different crafts projects. I hope it's useful for other parents and carers looking for craft inspiration.

Hobby Art Supplies: Considerations for Selecting a Canvas

If you are thinking about taking up or improving on your hobby art, you should consider using canvases. This product is ideal for different types of painting products. In addition, the canvas will allow you to display your work around your home as part of the décor. There are diverse types of canvases in the market, so selecting the right product can be difficult. Here are simple considerations to help you identify and purchase the ideal canvas for your activities.

Fabrication Material

There are two common materials used to manufacture art canvases: cotton and linen.  Cotton is the cheaper material, so this is a perfect choice if you are a complete beginner in canvas painting. The product is made from natural cotton threads that are intertwined to create the painting fabric. Normally, the quality of the material will depend on the weight of the cloth, which is determined by the canvas weave. Good cotton canvases have a higher thread count and are tightly woven. Unfortunately, the price is higher for increased thread counts. Linen canvases are finer and narrower, so the weave is tight and clean. Consequently, this type of product produces better artwork, but it is more expensive. You should also inquire about the availability of proprietary synthetic canvases from your art supplier.

Canvas Size

The right canvas size for your project will depend on the type of artwork that you are planning to handle. For example, if you plan on making miniature portraits or detailed postcard art, you should choose only small canvases to avoid feeling overwhelmed. In addition, you should consider your experience and budget before selection. In simple terms, it is not wise to purchase a large canvas if you have never completed a large piece. You should allow your skill to grow before using significant amounts of money on the product. Ideally, you should begin with canvases that match the size of your sketch book and work up to larger alternatives. You can also choose oval, oblong and circular canvases for additional visual interest.

Priming and Stretching

Canvases require priming and stretching before painting for better quality work. Basically, stretching involves spreading the cloth over a wooden frame to create a smooth and even surface for the artwork. Priming is the process of applying gesso, a paint-like mixture of gypsum and chalk, to prevent high paint absorbency and clotting. If you cannot perform these tasks at home, you should purchase pre-primed and pre-stretched canvases. Unfortunately, the purchase price is higher.

If you have any other questions about canvases, consider contacting a local supplier of art supplies.
